Laboratory Verification Program for Poultry
In-plant residue sampling is conducted on an individual farm basis for those farms producing poultry for export to the Russian Federation, following the guideline of “Export Requirements for Russia” established by the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Composite samples for pesticides, heavy metals, and Listeria monocytogenes are sent to laboratories quarterly. Composite samples for antibiotics are sent to laboratories monthly. Salmonella and Total Plate Count are tested on a consignment basis.

Much of the testing is done by private laboratories, with USDA verifying the reliability of those results through the Laboratory Verification Program for the Analysis of Poultry Products Destined for Exportation from the United States to Russia (USDA, AMS, Poultry LVP). There is an annual program management fee for participation in the program.

The testing for several infrequently used therapeutic antibiotics has not yet been incorporated into the AMS Laboratory Verification Program. Laboratories doing the infrequently used antibiotic testing must be ISO 17025 certified, according to the “Export Requirements for Russia.”
