Upon industry request, the LPS Program's Seed Regulatory and Testing Division tests and issues certificates of analysis on seed samples destined for export. The analysis conducted depends on a foreign country’s requirements and other tests requested by the importing country. Tests are conducted for seed purity, germination, noxious-weed seed contamination, as well as other tests requested by the importing country. The U.S. seed industry pays for the testing, and the cost depends on the number and complexity of the tests. Through a cooperative arrangement with Federal Grain Inspection Service (FGIS), LPS Program employees inspect shiploads of grain for various weeds which may be restricted by foreign countries.
