Major Provisions:

  • Commodity Regulated: Olives grown in California
  • Crop Shipping Season: August 1 through July 31
  • Fiscal Year: January 1 through December 31
  • Production Area(s): California
  • Order Authority and Regulations: The marketing order authorizes minimum grade and size requirements for olives produced in California. Minimum quality and size requirements are prescribed for canned, ripe (sliced and whole) olives. Size requirements also are applied to fresh olives. Currently, minimum quality and size requirements established under the order are applied to imported olives.
  • Research and Promotion: The order authorizes production and marketing research and development projects, including paid advertising. These programs are currently active.
  • The order was promulgated in 1965 and was last amended under formal rulemaking on November 12, 1982.

Committee Structure: The California Olive Committee administers the order locally. The committee is composed of eight grower representatives from two districts, and eight handler representatives. Members serve 2-year terms of office that begin June 1. There is no limit on the number of terms members may serve. The entire committee is selected in odd-numbered years. Producer nominees are selected by mail ballot. Because there are only two handler entities, members are recommended by companies they represent.
