WASHINGTON, Feb. 11, 2015 -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has scheduled a referendum for eligible mango first handlers and importers.

The referendum, scheduled for April 6, 2015, through April 17, 2015, will allow eligible first handlers and importers of mangos to determine whether they favor continuance of the Mango Promotion, Research and Information Order. The program will be continued if it is favored by a simple majority of the current first handlers and importers eligible to vote in the referendum.

USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) will conduct the referendum by mail. Ballots and voting instructions will be mailed on or before April 6, 2015, to all eligible individuals who handled or imported mangos between Jan. 1, 2014, through Dec. 31, 2014, and who currently handle or import mangos.

First handlers receiving 500,000 or more pounds of mangos and importers importing 500,000 or more pounds of mangos into the United States during the representative period are eligible to vote. Persons who received an exemption from assessments for the entire period are ineligible to vote.

Eligible first handlers or importers who do not receive a ballot by April 6, 2015, should contact referendum agent Jeanette Palmer via email at: Jeanette.Palmer@ams.usda.gov.

The Order was implemented under the Commodity Promotion, Research, and Information Act of 1996. Copies of the Federal Register notice announcing the referendum can be viewed at http://www.regulations.gov.
