Visual Aids for Inspection of Containers  
Visual Aids for Inspection of Containers are intended for use as references by inspectors, graders, and others in interpreting and applying standards. Each illustration is considered to be a typical representation of the indicated defect. The text accompanying each illustration explains, in general terms, the reasons for the classification of the defect as critical, major, or minor.

 
Metal Containers
This includes illustrations of defects applicable to the examination of the exterior condition of filled metal food containers under the United States Standards for Condition of Containers. Since the examination of such containers under the Standards also includes an examination of the can labels, illustrations of labeling defects are included.
Metal Container Defects. Reference Table IV – Metal Containers in 7 CFR Part 42.
Labeling, Marking, or Code Defects. Reference Table VIII in 7 CFR Part 42.

 
Glass Containers
This includes illustrations of defects applicable to the examination of the exterior condition of filled glass food containers under the United States Standards for Condition of Containers

Flexible Containers
This includes illustrations of defects applicable to the examination of the exterior condition of flexible food containers under the United States Standards for Condition of Containers.

Rigid and Semi-Rigid Containers
This includes illustrations of defects applicable to the examination of the exterior condition of filled, rigid, or semi-rigid food containers under the United States Standards for Condition of Containers. Since the examination of such containers under the Standards also includes an examination of labels, or markings on the containers, illustrations of labeling and marking defects are included.

Labeling, Marking, or Code Defects. Reference Table VIII in 7 CFR Part 42.
